Get a swimmers' bod
|
During my first consultation with potential clients to assess
their fitness goals, a very common question would be "Can you help me get a
swiimmer's physique?"
The question seems like a no brainer because the most
logical and direct answer would be to swim more often, right? Hey, c'mon, do
you really honestly think it is that simple? If that is the case, then why
aren't most of the guys who swim regularly at the local pool do not have
buffed up swimmer's body?
|
First of all, we need to know what do people mean by "getting a swimmer's
body". Is it the body of your local swimming pool lifeguard or of world class
competitive swimmer's physiques, like for example, Ian Thorpe? Most of the
time, they will mean the latter. I am sure most of you would have seen Ian
Thope's body in swimming competions or commercials he is endorsing. So do you
really think Ian Thorpe get his awesome physique by merely swimming? Of course
not. Competitive swimmers incorporate weight training into their exercise
program. Yes, swimming is a fantastic exercise and will get some people into
shape, but not the bodyshape of competitive swimmers.
How to get a swimmer's physique
Now, unknown to most people, although swimming is a great exercise, trying to get
a muscularly toned physique by swimming alone may get you into trouble
because swimming only develop the muscles that you use to pull and not to
push. You can swim in any stroke and in any style, do note that all your
swimming actions are all pulling actions. This can lead to muscle imbalances.
An imbalance in a muscle group will cause the opposite muscle to work too
hard, causing pain, strength and endurance loss in that muscle group.
Since the opposite muscles are not being trained, the development of the
pull muscles will also hit a plateau pretty soon as your muscles like to grow
symetrically. This will put the swimmer's improvements to a screeching halt
and that is one of the reasons competitive swimmers to train with weights.
They train with weight ressistance exercises not only to strengthen their pull
muscles but also to develop the push muscles so that their muscular and
strength development is balanced.
So you see, competitive swimmers get
their muscular and toned physiques not by swimming training alone but
through weight training as well. Now that you know how to get a swimmer's body
with those defined
six pack abs, then what are you waiting for? Go hit the gym and then
splash into the pool thereafter.
Best Wishes
