Control metabolism to lose weight

Metabolism Explained
Metabolism actually refers to the chemical processes within
your living cells. It is the process of how your body fat is stored or broken
down, how proteins are produced or destroyed and so on and so forth.

How does metabolism affect your weight?
Imagine your body as a living furnace. If the fire in a furnace is burning
intensively, then it will need to be fed with lots of fuel to get the fire to
continue to rage. This analogy is similar to people who have high metabolic
rate. Their body consume a lot of fuel (calories) to feed the metabolic
processes in the cells and the energy in the fuel is thus converted into other
forms of energy such as heat and movement.
It is this reason that a lot of calories are burnt away instead of being
stored as fat. This is also the reason why, people with high metabolism do not gain
weight easily and people with low metabolism finds it difficult to lose
weight.
People with an overactive thyroid gland also tend to have a
higher metabolic rate as thyroid hormones stimulate metabolism. Therefore
these people tend to be thin and are more intolerant to heat (since the body
is producing more heat than usual) and they may be more irritable and restless.
When you exercise, your muscles burn up more fuel
and thus increase your metabolic rate. This is the reason why you can lose
weight with exercising. It does not matter whether you have a low or high
metabolic rate, the energy required to jog, say 3 miles is the same. Therefore
those of you with low metabolic rate can raise your metabolic rate through
exercise.

Supplements to increase your metabolic rate – Do they work?
There are many health supplements in the market that claim to raise your
metabolic rate. Do they really work? Personally, I will be wary of such
products because if these so called supplements can increase your metabolic
rate significantly, they probably will not be sold over the counter and made
only available through your doctor's supervision as self medication with
effective metabolic increasing drugs can be dangerous.
For example, drugs that can raise your metabolism significantly such as
thyroid hormones or phentermine tend to be prescription drugs as they have
side effects. Caffeine taken in large amount can also raise your metabolic
rate, but it also causes irritability and restlessness.
If you have a slow metabolic rate, it can easily be overcome by
exercising and increasing your physical activities instead of relying on over
the counter drugs. Do remember that your total energy expenditure is the sum
of the energy expended through your basal metabolism and your physical
activities.
So choose to exercise more regularly because exercising regularly not
only raises your metabolism to lose
weight, it comes with many other health benefits as well. Your metabolism
also slows down as you age. This is mainly due to the decrease in muscle mass.
