The real reasons why people don't workout

Are you giving excuses for not exercising or are there real underlying reasons for that?

Although there are tremendous numerous benefits one can reap from exercising, statistics consistently show that two thirds of the people in developed countries (some variations country to country) do not workout on a regular basis and a quarter of them don’t even exercise at all. Why is this so? What are the most common excuses for not working out?

You've got it. The most common reason cited for not exercising is a lack of time. To some people, that could be a genuine reason, but to others, this is just a lame excuse because most people don’t put exercising on high priority. Click this link to find out how to find time to workout.

A survey poll conducted by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), based in San Diego, offers some additional and surprising insights on why people don't exercise. ACE asked visitors to its website about what, besides the lack of time, stands in their way of going to the gym. More than 1,500 people responded to the poll with some interesting excuses for not working out.

It is quite amusing to note that 19 percent of respondents said they are too out of shape to work out and afraid that they be the only one in the gym who is out of shape. But isn't this a compelling reason for them to start exercising and get in shape? You need to exercise to lose weight and gain bigger muscle so that you can get a good bodyshape isn’t it? Weird excuse, don’t you think so?

Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist at ACE said, "People who aren't fit often think they have got to get themselves in respectable bodyshape before they ever go to the gym." However this excuse isn't completely unfounded and especially so when the gym is filled with rock hard body gym rats.

The poll also found out that 21% of the respondents don’t workout because they don't know what to do when they are in the gym and 3 percent said they avoid the gym because they're afraid to ask questions.

Good exercise guidance can indeed be a real issue because gyms have cut back on the number of instructors who walk the floor and help out new members.

Most clubs these days may provide an orientation session to new members, but additional instruction is often only available by paying a personal trainer for it and hiring a gym instructor is rather expensive for some people. It is a commercial world after all.

Another 46 percent of the respondents said that gyms are just too crowded, while 11 percent said people working out in the gyms are rude. Gym etiquette requires wiping dry cardio equipment after use, not monopolizing exercise stations and avoiding long mobile phone gossips, among other nice courtesies.

Looking at all the excuses, it all boils down to this. Many people say they don't have the time workout and even if they do, they don't know where or how to start. Obviously they have not visited this burn fat build muscles website, right?

Many of these folks obviously feel that they are way out of shape that it is too big of an effort to get started. Then to make matters worse for those who really do got started, sticking with an exercise program is another exhaustive challenge. That is why according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), more than half of the people who begin exercising throw in the towel within three to six months.
