What Is Resveratrol

You may have just recently heard about resveratrol and its many health benefits and even may think it is a recent discovery. Do you know that the scientific world knew about this wonderful compound since 1940 although it greatly gain interest with the discovery of resveratrol in the skin of grapes.

This discovery sparked of the "French Paradox" which is the fact that the wine loving French people eat a diet very high in saturated fats and yet have low rates of heart diseases. The possibility that a compound like resveratrol could reverse or even halt the effect of saturated fat in the body may be a reason to consider using resveratrol as a health supplement.

Resveratrol is also found in some plants, fruits and seeds besides grape. The MD Anderson Cancer Center describes resveratrol as being made by plants "to help defend against invading fungi, stress, injury, infection and too much sunlight."

Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound known as polyphenol and polyphenols are known to have excellent antioxidant effects. Antioxidants aid in neutralizing and minimizing the damage of free radicals in the human body.

Health Benefits Of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is the most active red wine catechin and that is the reason moderate consumption of red wine is encouraged for its health benefits. In red wines, the catechins are extracted from the skin of red wine grapes. Although red wine catechins are found in red wine grapes, this compound is most abundant and active in immature grapes. Numerous researches has found that this compound is very powerful and has many useful applications for a variety of health benefits and thus spawned many health supplement companies to introduce resveratrol into their range of health supplement products.

Resveratrol Pevents Cancers

Resveratrol is a useful anti cancer supplement. Scientists at the University of Chicago reported in the journal "Science" that resveratrol helps stop three major stages of cancer development. The cancers tested in this research were bladder, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers. Click this link to see resveratrol testimonials.

During the initiation phase of cancer, the body is overwhelmed with carcinogenic substances and resveratrol was shown to be able to halt cancer development at this first stage. It also stopped the promotion stage in which the tumor releases inflammatory chemicals necessary for it to establish its own supply of nutrients and spread through the bloodstream.

In leukemia, resveratrol promoted differentiation, the process where the multiplication of cancer cells is stopped and white blood cell counts resume their normal life cycle. Scientists in Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea, discovered that resveratrol deactivates several forms of the liver enzyme P450, which is necessary to change many chemicals into a carcinogenic cancerous form. This finding was confirmed by the National Cancer Institute.

The University of Minnesota discovered resveratrol activates the P53 gene, which is responsible for destroying cells with damaged DNA. Coronary Artery Disease.

Resveratrol also exhibits the ability to slow down the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. It also inhibits the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins or LDL's which in layman term means "bad cholesterol." Furthermore, it blocks platelet aggregation, which helps fight off the formation of clots in blood vessels.

Many health supplement companies touted resveratrol as an anti-aging supplement. Although there are some evidence to support this claim, tests have not been done on humans as at the time of writing this article and so it is not known if these benefits will translate to people. There are also many claims that supplementing with resveratrol can help you to lose weight, reduce stress, make you feel and even look younger.

In a study conducted at the University of Basel of Switzerland, it was found that resveratrol offers protection against beta-amyloid, a neurotoxic substance implicated in the cell death that occurs during Alzheimer's disease where it maintained cell viability. This study suggests this compound may offer a neuroprotective effect. Click the following link to read more about supplementing your diet with resveratrol supplement.
