Why am I still fat? - Reply to that fat guy at the gym

I recently conducted an interview with a fat man who has been working out at the gym for 5 years and yet, he is still as fat. You can read the about the interview and my comments are in bold.

Actually, this is not an isolated case and on the contrary it is quite a common phenomena which you get to see in every gym. You will understand why they remain fat despite the years of working out.

This fat guy is regularly working out for some years in the same gym as me. He was very fat when I first saw him and now some years of gym workouts have passed by and he is now ............still very fat. Still the same body shape, size and weight despite so many years of working out in the gym. What gives? So I decided to interview him to see what went wrong about his weight loss program.

By the way, it is because I see him so often in the gym that we have become gym buddies and that is why he is consenting to this interview.

An interview Q&A with the fat guy at the gym

Q: What is your height and weight?

A: 5 feet 11 inches (180cm) and weigh 220 pounds (100kg).

Q: How long have you been working out in the gym and what was your weight then?

A: I have been working out in the gym for about 5 years. My weight then was more or less the same as now.

Q: What are your exercise routine do you follow?

A: I do cardio exercises on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays by walking on the treadmill in the gym for 45 minutes each time.

Comments: Better than being sedentary. However to lose weight more efficiently, he should not be walking but to jog or even run to raise his heart rate to 70% - 80% of his maximum heart rate. Also do the cardio exercises more often like 5-6 times per week.

Q: 45 minutes each time? That must be very boring, isn't it?

A: Not so. That is when I can catch up with the news because I always bring along some newspapers and magazines to read.

Comments: See, if he to raises his heart rate, he will be huffing and puffing away. The efficient weight loss activity will not allow him to read anything. For example, if he workout out with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) he will be running his lungs out so how could he read anything when performing such an intensive cardio exercise?

Q: I see. What about your weight training routine?

A: Well, I train with weights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I do about 100 sit ups each time to reduce the tummy fat on my belly and do dumb bell bicep curls to tone my flabby arms.

Comments: There is no such thing as spot reduction by exercising a particular part of the body. He is wasting his time. Besides, if he can do 100 sit ups, then he is very likely executing the exercise in the wrong form. An average person will not be able to perform so many sit ups if the exercise is executed correctly. By the way, sit up is a terrible abs exercise.

Why do bicep curls? Biceps are small muscles and will not develop overall body muscularity and burn very little calories. He should be doing compound exercises like squats, dead lifts, bar bell rows and bench presses to burn massive amount of calories as well as building up overall body muscularity.

Q: What other weight lifting exercises do you do besides sit ups and bicep curls?

A: I don't do other exercises because I don't want to get bigger as I am already big (fat) enough.

Q: Do you diet?

A: I don't really believe in dieting, but I do restrict my caloric intake by not having breakfast. That will mean I am consuming one third less calories from the normal 3 meals a day.

Comments: He is missing the most important meal of the day and that is breakfast. On top of that, by skipping meals, his metabolic rate will plunge slowing down calorie burning. His body will conserve fat and burn his muscles for energy.

Q: Having been working out in the gym for so many years, are you happy with your results?

A: Of course I am happy with my results. I am not getting any fatter and have been maintaining my weight. Without the gym workouts, I will probably be much fatter now.

Comments: Denial mode.

Q: Then why can't you lose your body fat and build well toned muscles?

A: Well, I guess I am unlike you. You are lean and muscularly toned because you probably have a set of good genes. Maybe my genes are not as good, so I am predestined to be fat.

Comments: Common big fat excuse.

Q: A final question. Have you ever considered hiring a fitness personal trainer to help you lose weight and gain muscles?

A: Ermmmm.... you want an honest reply?

Q: Yes.

A: With due respect Chris, I think hiring a fitness personal trainer is a waste of money. I mean what is so difficult that you need to hire a trainer. We all know that we need to train with cardio and weights to be healthy and this is what I am doing aren't I? I have also read your article "Why you don't need to hire a personal trainer." Although the article was written with some humor and sarcasm, I think there are some truths in it.

Comments:  One must have knowledge in order to be successful in any thing. He can hire a certified personal trainer to tap on the fitness professional’s knowledge.  Someone once said, "If you are to do the same thing everyday, you will get the same result. Nothing will change."   Any wonder why he is still the same fat guy at the gym 5 years ago?
