Mesotherapy Controversy
Undergoing a Mesotherapy treatment for weight
loss or body fat reduction has always been a very personal controversial
matter. This method commonly used for targeted weight loss is very popular in
France, but is not looked upon favorably by health authorities in some countries
such as Singapore.
In March 2008, Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) warned doctors and
potential patients against a list of unproven aesthetic treatments offered by
some physicians, from medicated cocktails which claimed to dissolve fat to
anti-aging hormonal injections. On the other hand, there are patients who
swear that the treatments work and thus arise the controversy.
This article will not take sides on the debate on whether Mesotherapy
treatment is effective and safe in the quest
of losing weight or for spot reduction, but will describe what this body
contouring treatment is about.
What is Mesotherapy?
The Mesotherapy technique of weight loss treatment was invented by a French
doctor, Dr. Michel Pistor in early 1950s. It is a procedure where a cocktail
of drugs is injected into the mesoderm which is the layer of fat and
connective tissue lying just below the skin.
Since then, thousands doctors and physicians around the world have used
the Mesotherapy technique for treatment of various of reasons from overall
weight loss, spot weight reduction, body contouring, cellulite reduction,
wrinkle elimination so on and so forth. At other times, Mesotherapy is also
used to correct unevenness, lumps, or divots that develop after a liposuction
treatment. Liposuction is another body fat elimination technique where the
body fat is physically and painfully sucked out.
In 1987, The French Academy of Medicine recognized Mesotherapy as an
inherent part of French traditional medicine and The International Society of
Mesotherapy boast of membership from about 15 countries from Europe to South
America. However, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does
not approve the use of mesotherapy drugs. Similarly Britain, Canada and Brazil
have also banned the drugs although the procedure is hugely popular in France.
Mesotherapy treatment involves using a very tiny needle and medication
is injected into the mesoderm. Sometimes the technique of "multi-pricking" is
used, where a number of swift injections are concentrated in a specific body
part. Although "multi-pricking" can be done by hand, there are mechanical
delivery systems that deliver the medication in a more accurate way and to
reduce discomfort in patients.
The cocktail of medicines used in Mesotherapy is supposed to melt the
fat cells in the mesoderm and shrink the fat cells in the Scarpa's fascia
layer. The fat is then said to be excreted alongside the bowel without any
changes to the patient's bowel movement habits.

weigh with law of attraction
For cellulite reduction, weight loss, spot reduction and body
contouring, the medicines are injected directly into the areas being treated.
Treatments are usually administered on a weekly basis, and patients are said
to be able to see results by the third or fourth treatment.
The medication used in Mesotherapy is usually a concoction of vitamins,
herbal products and medication. Many factors are taken into consideration to
determine which is the most effective combination. Physicians and doctors
administering the treatment will usually instruct patients to follow a
prescribed healthy diet along with some exercise to compliment the treatment
and because toxins are also eliminated in the process, patients are advised
drink more water to flush out the toxins and dissolved fat. Mesotherapy
treatment is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, insulin dependant
diabetics or patients with a history of stroke, cancer, blood clots and heart
diseases.
So does Mesotherapy work or is it a safe
technique for weight loss and body contouring? Your guess is as good as
mine until more scientific and clinical evidence are produced.
